Meeting of the Panel on Efficacy Evaluation of Herbicides 
and Plant Growth Regulators

The meeting of the Panel on Efficacy Evaluation of Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) took place in the Vienna on 2016-002-09/11 hosted by AGES. Special thanks are due to Ms Böhm and her colleagues for the warm hospitability and excellent organization of this meeting. At the meeting Mr Follak gave an interesting presentation on the ‘Spread and impact of invasive weeds in Austria’.

Development of EPPO Standards

The Panel continued its main work on the preparation of Standards for conducting field trials to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides and plant growth regulators. A draft for a new specific Standard for Control of suckers in orchards was discussed and considered ready for country consultation with the amendments agreed at the meeting.

The Panel also studied two draft General Standards of particular relevance for herbicides:

  • Cleaning application equipment – efficacy aspects
  • Efficacy considerations and data generation when making changes to the chemical composition of PPP

These Standards will continue to be developed taking into account the comments received at the meeting and will then be presented to the Panel on General Standards on Efficacy Evaluation.

 

Zonal examples

A new zonal example ‘Clarification of efficacy data requirements for the authorization of a plant growth regulator in spring oilseed rape in the European Northern authorization zone’ has been drafted. The Panel welcomed this new example and suggested that it should cover both spring and winter oilseed rape. Progress on this document will be made by correspondence. The aim is to align it with NORBARAG guidelines.

 

Extrapolation tables

New extrapolation tables for effectiveness and crop safety of herbicides for Weeds in Beta crops were developed by the Panel. Extrapolation tables are developed to accompany EPPO Standard PP 1/257 Efficacy and crop safety extrapolations for minor uses and provide detailed lists of acceptable extrapolations for regulatory authorities and applicants in the context of the registration of plant protection products for minor uses. These are available on the EPPO website.

The Panel on Efficacy Evaluation of Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators will next meet in Paris (EPPO Headquarters) on 2017-03-13/15.
