EPPO activities on communication
Panel on Plant Protection Information
In addition to providing the EPPO Secretariat with feed-back on EPPO information services, the Panel on Plant Protection Information discusses how to better communicate on plant health issues at an international level. It reflects on possible communication actions or material which could be developed by EPPO for the NPPOs of its member countries.
Standards
Two Standards provide NPPOs with general guidance on when and how to raise awareness on regulated and emerging pests. The Standards are addressed to two different types of audience: the general public and professional operators. In addition to general guidance, both Standards contain many examples of communication campaigns which have been carried out in the EPPO region.
PM 3/86 – Raising public awareness of quarantine and emerging pests
PM 3/94 – Raising professional operators' awareness of regulated and emerging plant pests
Platform on Communication Material
This free online platform is addressed to NPPOs of EPPO member countries and is moderated by the EPPO Secretariat. Its objective is to share material (e.g. posters, videos, flyers, pictures) that has been prepared during communication campaigns on plant health and provide inspiration for future campaigns.
All EPPO member countries are encouraged to actively participate by sharing their ideas and communication materials on this platform.

Communication kits
A poster and other material (leaflet, luggage tag, key chain, email signatures) have been produced to raise public awareness about the risks of moving plants and plant products during international travels and to encourage responsible behaviour.
- Templates are available here in different languages (English, French, Chinese and Arabic)
- View examples of how the poster was used by NPPOs
Pest-specific posters
In order to help the NPPOs of its member countries, the EPPO Secretariat has prepared templates for posters on pests (including invasive alien plants). These templates can easily be adapted to different types of pest-specific information campaigns (e.g. early warning, pest reporting, containment and eradication programmes). All templates are also stored in the EPPO Platform on Communication Material.
Beastie the Bug
To celebrate the International Year of Plant Health in 2020, the EPPO Secretariat created a mascot, ‘Beastie the Bug’, symbolizing an invasive pest. Beastie’s mission was to travel the world providing opportunities for the global plant health community to share photos, videos, and stories. Beastie the Bug travelled more than 425 000 km across the globe and its success reflected the incredible creativity of plant health specialists on all continents.
