EPPO Webinars on regional representation in IPPC bodies

The EPPO Panel on Global Phytosanitary Affairs expressed the need to ensure continuity of regional representation in IPPC bodies as it is important for the EPPO region to continue to receive a good response from member countries to IPPC Calls and ensure good representation of Europe.

 

Therefore, two webinars on IPPC regional representation were organized on the 6th and 8th of July 2021. The first webinar was organized for Heads of the National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) with the aim to raise awareness about the importance of the regional representation in IPPC bodies and highlight the importance of the involvement and commitment of appropriate experts. The second webinar was for experts interested in being nominated for IPPC bodies and Expert Working Groups to inform them about what involvement in this work entails and requires.

 

The following points were presented and discussed during the webinar:

  • The different types and nature of the IPPC bodies and the FAO regions
  • The importance and benefits for Europe of the regional representation
  • The role of EPPO in regional representation
  • The tasks and the way of working of the EPPO Panel on Global Phytosanitary Affairs
  • The current membership from Europe and the procedures for nomination

 

Mr Sam Bishop of the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (United Kingdom), Ms Mariangela Ciampitti of the Plant Protection Service of Regione Lombardia (Italy) and Mr Thorwald Geuze of the Dutch NPPO (NVWA), members of the EPPO Panel on Global Phytosanitary Affairs, kindly agreed to share their experience with the audience as members of IPPC bodies and Expert Working Groups.

 

All EPPO countries were once again strongly encouraged to contribute by nominating and supporting experts for regional representation as this is crucial for the EPPO region and for continuation of its global influence in Plant Health.
