51st Meeting of the Working Party on Plant Protection Products

Teleconference, 2021-06-14/15

The 51st Meeting of the Working Party on Plant Protection Products took place by videoconference, on 2021-06-14/15. The meeting of the Working Party was attended by 23 participants including 18 representatives from EPPO countries. A representative of CropLife Europe and a representative of IBMA also attended as observers. The EPPO Working Party on Plant Protection Products directs and supervises the technical work of the EPPO Panels concerned with the efficacy evaluation and registration of plant protection products. The major points from the meeting are summarized below.

EPPO Standards for approval

The Working Party on Plant Protection Products approved one new Specific Standard and eight revised Standards (six Specific and two General Standards) in the series PP1 Efficacy Evaluation of Plant Protection Products. These Standards will be submitted to the EPPO Council in September 2021 for final approval and subsequent publication in the EPPO Bulletin.

New Specific Standard

Aphids in winter oilseed rape, including aphid vectors of viruses

Revised Specific Standards

Revision of PP 1/65 Downy mildews of vegetables

Revision of PP 1/78 Root, stem, foliar and pod diseases of oilseed rape

Revision of PP 1/103 Soil borne Phytophthora spp. on fruiting (solanaceous and cucurbitaceous) vegetable and legume vegetable crops

Revision of PP 1/185 Regulation of growth in olive (except sucker control)

Revision of PP 1/303 Efficacy evaluation of products for the control of grapevine trunk diseases in vineyards

Revision of PP 1/313 Halyomorpha halys

Revised General Standards

Revision of PP 1/181 Conduct and reporting of efficacy evaluation trials, including good experimental practice

Revision of PP 1/248 Harmonized system for classification and coding of the uses of plant protection products

EPPO Codes

The Working Party was informed that progress was made on the development of the harmonized classification to describe PPP uses and that non-taxonomic EPPO Codes are integrated in the EPPO Global Database. The newly developed Codes were also included into revised Standard ‘PP 1/248 Harmonized system for classification and coding of the uses of plant protection products’.

Resistance to plant protection products

The aim of EPPO Database on Resistance Cases is to share information among the responsible authorities for registration of plant protection products in the EPPO region and between authorities and the agrochemical companies which apply for registration of their products. The Working Party decided that the prototype of the database is now ready to be made available for EPPO member countries to propose resistance cases substantiated by data. The Working Party also considered the database ready to allow access for a wider audience to view validated cases. Procedures for adding proposed cases and viewing validated cases were approved.

Minor Uses Extrapolation Database

EPPO extrapolation tables for minor uses were prepared some years ago. Following the wishes of member countries, it was decided to set up a database to make the data of the extrapolation tables more searchable. The Working Party was informed that the Expert Working Group on extrapolation database was created and started its work on the prototype of the database.

Programme of activity

The Working Party discussed future activities and priorities which will be submitted as part of EPPO’s work programme 2022 to the EPPO Council in September 2021 for approval. In addition to proposals for new Standards or revision of existing ones, future activities include new zonal examples and the work on the testing of the effect of PPPs on transformation processes. The Working Party agreed on the further development of EPPO Database on resistance cases and on the further development of a Database on extrapolation possibilities for minor uses.

The next Working Party on Plant Protection Products will take place on 2022-05-31/06-02.
